Help! I suck at technology!

I seem to be having difficulty with things on the internet. I keep on getting "error on page" messages in the bottom left-hand corner when I try to click on the square type buttons to, for example, confirm that someone is a friend on facebook. What can I do?

Also, the Scrabble application won't work.

Also, I need a new computer. I want a laptop. Any ideas of where to start?

ETA: Livejournal square "post" button works. Yahoo mail "reply" button doesn't. I have no idea what the significance of this is.

Ummmm... having cleaned out the office two months ago, I have 1 or 2 PC's that need A Good Home. They're not laptops though, but you're absolutely welcome to one (although I still have to clean off the hard-drive). Doesn't have Windows OS ... Linux only I'm afraid. Still, an OEM copy of XP will only set you back about $130.

If you're buying a laptop:

1. List what you need/want it to do. (Word Processing, Email, games, etc.) Refer back to this list when talking to salesdroids who are trying to sell you a high-end gaming laptop for playing Scrabble on.

2. "Avoid Windows Vista" is the word on the street.

3. If your needs are modest, look into 2nd hand or refurbished laptops. Ross's Auctions periodically auctions off large amounts of ex-corporate laptops. My "new" laptop is a 2 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 and it does everything I need it to (including photoshop stuff). So even older machines are probably quite capable of doing what you require.

4. Ask technical hardware people who run Windows what is good. Refer them back to #1 if they start dribbling on about running WOW or Quake at 30fps and that's not what you're into.
